I’ll admit it: I’ve tried a lot (way too many) of bad canned coffees. Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad that sugary, fatty coffees (yes, I’m talking about Starbucks Frappuccinos) have been kicked to the curb, but why are all the new, healthier coffees so… bland? People who only like black coffee have always had healthy and tasty canned coffee options, but those of us who want a little more fun have been left out in the cold. It’s 2021, so someone (please, anyone!) must be able to come up with a healthier option that also tastes great.

I heard about Super Coffee, which claims to do just that when Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell gave it their stamp of approval on a recent episode of Armchair Expert. In addition to the Bell-Shepards’ praise, Jennifer Lopez, Alex Rodriguez, Aaron Rodgers, and many other celebrities and athletes have backed Super Coffee and put money into it. I tried all three of the celebrity-loved brand’s new plant-based canned coffees to find out what all the fuss was about and to find something better for my fellow health-conscious coffee radicals.

From Humble Beginnings

The story of Super Coffee starts in a college dorm room, like many other success stories that make people feel envious. At the time, Jordan DeCicco was a college basketball player. The ingredient lists on the back of the energy drinks and coffee drinks he could find at his local store didn’t impress him. Jake and Jim DeCicco, his brothers, thought they could make something better, so they did.

Soon after, the Decicco brothers were on Shark Tank. None of the Sharks invested in them, but Alex Rodriguez and Patrick Schwarzenegger reached out to take advantage of what the Sharks missed. Super Coffee has grown by leaps and bounds, and Inc Magazine just named it the fastest-growing food and drink brand in America.

What’s The Buzz All About?

I’d be lying if I said that all the famous people in Super Coffee didn’t impress me. What gives? Are they trying to sell magic in a bottle? On paper, it looks like it: a coffee product that is better for you tastes better, and has more benefits. Super Coffee says it tastes as good as a Starbucks Frappuccino, which has 52g of sugar and 370 calories. Why didn’t anyone tell me that when I was younger? while each can has only 80 calories, 0 grams of sugar, and 10 grams of protein.

Super Coffee is made with a plant-based protein from peas that has all nine essential amino acids, healthy fats from MCT oil, and caffeinated coffee. It is meant to give you a steady, jitter-free energy boost that doesn’t come with a crash. Super Coffee is also gluten-free, lactose-free, and good for people on the keto diet. The brand just added French Vanilla, Coconut Mocha, and Sweet Cream to its plant-based line of on-the-go cans. I was able to try all three of them.

Cracking Open A Can

I chose to start with the French Vanilla flavor to keep things simple. I couldn’t believe how quickly Super Coffee took me back to when I was a kid. For the first time in a long time, I had to slow down so I wouldn’t finish my can of Super Coffee too quickly. I was curious about how the coffee could taste so sweet without any sugar, so I looked at Super Coffee’s ingredients. I was impressed to find that the list was shorter than the carton of oat milk in my fridge: organic Colombian coffee, pea protein, cocoa powder, MCT oil, potassium phosphate, monk fruit, natural vanilla flavor, calcium carbonate, organic green coffee caffeine, and glean gum.

All three flavors have that “surely this can’t be good for me” taste, but Coconut Mocha is my favorite of the three. Compared to the others, it has more depth, but all of them are delicious. Even more exciting was the little burst of energy I felt, which helped me get through the tasks of the morning. The best part was that I slowly came back to reality a few hours later, so I didn’t have to worry about the crash that most people fear when they drink coffee.

For the record, you shouldn’t buy canned coffee from Super Coffee if you like your coffee black. When I say they are sweet, I really mean that. You can choose from a wide range of products at Super Coffee, including pods, creamers, grounds, espresso, cold brews, and a number of specialty canned coffees with milk, such as Maple Pumpkin and White Chocolate Peppermint.

Truly Buzzing

When I took my first sip of Super Coffee, I knew I liked it. Later that night, when I went to bed, I knew I really wanted Super Coffee because I was excited to fall asleep so I could wake up and try another flavor. As someone who gets to try a lot of different things, I know I’ve found something special when it starts to stick in my mind. Super Coffee is tasty, healthy, and brings back good memories. It hits all the right notes, and it may just be magic in a can.

5 More Reasons to Love Super Coffee:
